What is Benign Prostate Enlargement?

Benign Prostate Enlargement (BPE), also known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), is a common condition where the prostate gland enlarges as men age. This can lead to uncomfortable urinary symptoms such as difficulty starting urination, frequent urination (especially at night), or the feeling of incomplete bladder emptying.

What to Expect from Mr. Rai’s Treatment

Mr. Rai is highly experienced in managing and treating BPE, offering a comprehensive and patient-focused approach to diagnosis, treatment, and aftercare. Here’s what you can expect when you consult with Mr. Rai:

Detailed Assessment and Diagnosis:

The first step involves a thorough evaluation of your symptoms and medical history. Mr. Rai will likely perform a digital rectal exam (DRE) to assess the size of the prostate and may recommend further diagnostic tests such as:

A Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test to rule out prostate cancer

A urine test to check for signs of infection

An ultrasound scan of the bladder and kidneys to assess any potential complications

Urine flow studies to measure the strength of your urine stream

In some cases, a cystoscopy, where a thin tube with a camera is inserted into the urethra to look directly at the bladder and prostate

Tailored Treatment Plan:

Once diagnosed, Mr. Rai will discuss the best treatment options based on the severity of your symptoms and your overall health. For mild to moderate cases, lifestyle changes, such as reducing caffeine or alcohol intake, or medications that relax the prostate muscles or shrink the prostate, may be recommended.

However, for more advanced cases where symptoms are more severe or if complications have developed, Mr. Rai may suggest surgical intervention.

Minimally Invasive Treatment Options:

Rezum™ Water Vapor Therapy:

Rezum™ is a minimally invasive procedure that uses the natural energy of water vapor (steam) to shrink the enlarged prostate

tissue. This treatment is done in an outpatient setting and typically takes only a few minutes. The steam is delivered directly into the prostate, where it causes the excess tissue to break down, allowing for improved urine flow.

Benefits:

Quick recovery, typically within a few days

Minimal side effects, with a lower risk of sexual dysfunction compared to more invasive treatments

Can be performed under local anaesthesia

Aquablation

Aquablation is an advanced robotic procedure that uses high-pressure water jets to precisely remove excess prostate tissue. Guided by real-time imaging, Aquablation allows for greater accuracy, reducing the risk of damaging surrounding tissue. This method is ideal for patients with larger prostates or more complex cases of BPE.

Benefits:

Minimally invasive with reduced recovery time

High precision, leading to fewer complications

Effective for prostates of any size

iTind:

The iTind (Temporary Implantable Nitinol Device) is a novel treatment option for BPE that involves placing a temporary device in the urethra. Over a period of 5-7 days, the iTind reshapes the prostatic urethra, relieving the obstruction caused by the enlarged prostate. Once the device is removed, patients typically experience improved urine flow and symptom relief without the need for cutting or permanent implants.

Benefits:

Non-permanent and minimally invasive

Short procedure with no incisions

Temporary device, allowing for natural urine flow restoration without the need for major surgery

Surgical Treatment:

TURP (Transurethral Resection of the Prostate):

TURP is the most well-established and commonly performed surgery for BPE. During this procedure, Mr. Rai removes the excess prostate tissue through the urethra using a resectoscope. This allows for significant improvement in urinary symptoms. TURP is performed under spinal or general anaesthesia, and most patients experience rapid relief from symptoms.

Benefits:

Proven long-term results with significant symptom improvement

Minimally invasive with no external incisions

Fast recovery time with hospital stays typically lasting only 1-2 days

Post-Treatment Care and Recovery:

After any of these procedures, Mr. Rai and his team will provide comprehensive post-operative care, including follow-up appointments to monitor your recovery and address any concerns. Patients can expect to return to their daily activities relatively quickly, with symptom relief usually occurring within a few days to weeks, depending on the treatment.
